Hiker Meet-up (offsite)
Every October, the Ice Age Trail Alliance celebrates Wisconsin’s own Ice Age National Scenic Trail through the Mammoth Challenge, daring participants to hike all month. This year, we’re offering an opportunity to get your Challenge miles, or just have some fun, by taking this 10-mile hike through the Ice Age Trail - Devil’s Lake State Park segment.
The hike is led by Park Naturalist Sue Johansen-Mayoleth and Friends board member Claire Aither Donachie.
After the hike, join us at Tumbled Rock Brewery & Kitchen (down the road from the North Shore entrance) for a hiker meet-up. Join us for the hike, the meet-up, or both!
Details to “know before you go”:
You’ll hike about 10 miles of the Ice Age Trail.
Meet at the Nature Center and start the hike with the West Bluff and working east. You’ll get to see Balanced Rock, both bluffs, campgrounds, and more!
This hike is difficult – attendees will be hiking up and down bluffs, walking on uneven ground, and going up and down slick staircases. Hiking / trekking poles are recommended (if you don’t have your own, borrow a set for free from the Nature Center).
There will be two spots where Ice Age Trail Alliance Angels will pick you up if you are only interested in completing part of the route.
South Shore day use area
Ice Age Trail Parking Lot off of HWY 113.
Pack a lunch and bring some snacks and plenty of water. You will have a chance to fill up water bottles at both the North and South Shore Day use areas. You’ll stop for lunch and make stops for snacks too.
If you’re up for an adventure, this is the hike for you! This hike is best for adults and teenagers.
Please register in advance.
Vehicle admission is required to park in the state park. There is no cost to participate in the hike or meet-up.
If you have any questions, please reach out to the Friends, info@friendsofdevilslake.org.
Post-hike Meet-up!
Thru-hikers, hikers, Ice Age Trail enthusiasts, wannabe thru-hikers, and other outdoorspeople are invited to join us for a hiker social! If you’re not doing the hike, no worries. Head to the Tumbled Rock Brewery outdoor space (between the restaurant and the taproom near the stage) and look for the Friends and IATA flags. We’ll have folks there by 2 pm to reserve seats. Share trail stories, meet other enthusiasts, and enjoy a fall Saturday connecting with the Friends of Devil’s Lake and the Ice Age Trail Alliance - Baraboo Hills/Heritage Chapter! No registration is necessary for this activity.
